Growing up in California, my Daddy instilled a love of photography and art. He was extremely artistic and at some point that love of art rubbed off on me. I think I was born with a camera in my hands. My first memories of cameras is an old Brownie box camera. I was the only student in my kindergarten class who was allowed to bring a camera on field trips and surprisingly at that age, I was able to capture images that were worth keeping. Shortly after this point Daddy purchased one of the earliest Polaroid cameras. Always wanting the best on the market, I was able to experiment with photography and develop my own personal "eye" for the art of photography. I took every photography class available to me in school.
As a young adult I had a family of my own. My budget did not afford me the luxury of the newest and greatest in camera equipment, but I was able from time to time to borrow a Minolta 35mm SLR. Photography on a budget caused me to be very careful to study and get my shots correct the first time. Most of my photography during this time was portraiture in nature but on occasion I would allow myself to explore strictly artistic endeavors.
As my family grew up, I began purchasing better equipment and eventually landed in a position of Yearbook Editor for a private school. This was an incredibly delightful time for me. I was given a school owned SLR and an unlimited film and processing budget as long as I provided coverage of every school, church, club or sporting event in which the school participated. This gave me the ability to practice and experiment to develop the basis for my style today. I discovered a love for detail and macro photography. Of course the job required a photojournalist approach which later proved very helpful when I began to scrapbook.
After moving to Kentucky I purchased my first DSLR. I had already been shooting a higher end Point and Shoot Digital for about six years but continued to count on my SLR for artistic work. The idea of combining the freedom of digital with the control of an SLR was the perfect match for me. I am truly hooked on photography.
I have always felt that you never learn everything you need to know. I will continue to learn and evolve my photography skills. I attend workshops and classes as often as possible. I am a member of PPAGL (Professional Photographers of Greater Louisville) and the Photo Forum. Through networking with other professional photographers I am able to share in the knowledge of the best of the best!
I have achieved several
awards and ribbons in recognition of my photographic skills.
